The following facts highlight our call for action:

- 1 in 5 persons experience symptoms of mental illness in his/her lifetime
- Mental illness often strikes in prime working years
- It is the leading cause of suicide, the 2nd leading cause of death for people under 35
- Mental illness accounted for 1.5 million hospitals days in 1999, almost 4% of the total. The numbers are likely higher today
- It costs business more annually in lost productivity than all the strikes and production defaults
- Language and cultural barriers can make mental illness impossible to diagnose

Since its inception in 1982 as a Ministry of Health funded agency, Hong Fook has evolved into a leading-edge service provider in the community mental health field. Its focus on culture-appropriate, multi-lingual community mental health service has garnered Hong Fook the reputation as a one-of-a-kind agency in its field. With its unique and comprehensive case management approach, Hong Fook has been providing a full range of family-oriented services in Cambodian, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin and Vietnamese to help mentally ill immigrants live successfully in the community.
In 2001, the Ministry of Health called on Hong Fook to provide housing and support to homeless mentally ill immigrants. The resulting Supportive Housing Program is now fully operational with 22 units throughout the city. A large scale 2-year project launched in 2001 to promote mental health among East and Southeast Asian immigrant women is also on course.
